New CD Digipak Style Announced: CS1026

August 27, 2010 predisc Leave a comment

Precision Disc Manufacturing Corp. is happy to announce a new addition to our eco-friendly line of CD Digipak products – namely the “CS1026″.

The CS1026 CD Digipak features 6 panel construction with one ‘tube’ style pocket which is integral to the front cover panel of the Digipak. A tube pocket is open on both ends (like a tunnel) so the contents of the pocket can be accessed when the Digipak is open or closed.

Ideally, the tube pocket is used in conjunction with a printed paper insert, be that a folder or stapled booklet. The tube pocket is not recommended for use with a second disc.

As per the illustration shown above, the CS1026 has two variations:

  • CS1026-c : Featuring a single disc tray (either clear or black coloured) in the middle panel.
  • CS1026-r : Featuring a single disc tray (either clear or black coloured) in the right hand panel.

Regular pricing includes CMYK 4/0 print which, after die-cutting, folding and gluing, provides full colour print on all visible panels. The CS1026 CD Digipak is printed on our standard “tree hugger” white boardstock with semi-gloss finish:

  • 100% recyclable
  • 50% post-consumer waste
  • Forest Stewardshp Council (FSC) certified
  • Acid free
  • Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF)

100% recycled content boardstock as well as kraft/brown ‘chipboard’ are also available – please contact us to confirm pricing.

More Happy Customers!

August 11, 2010 predisc Leave a comment

It’s always great to hear back from clients so we thought that we’d share a few of our most recent testimonials with you!

“I would like to pass on many thanks to yourself and your team. You were all amazing throughout every step of the way. I’d also like to say a big big thank you for getting the product to us on time, for the EP release party. Precision Disc did a fantastic job, as always! And I will definitely be coming back again with MORE TIME to spare!”  ~  Disa C.

This client sent this comment to the members of his Professional Videographers Association:  “I just received 1000 replicated DVDs all packaged up and I’m really happy with the company that did it for me.  Precision Disc (http://www.predisc.com) is a company that has a manufacturing plant in Surrey, B.C.  I tried working with a local outfit that is an agent for a big replication house in eastern Canada. I had used them before but they have changed hands and the new owners haven’t got a clue. Precision Disc has a great system that keeps you up to speed on the progress of the job and they’re super easy to work with.  You can get a quote online very quickly unless your job is outside the normal in which case you just call them. Their prices were lower than I expected. If you have a replication job, these are your people!  I can’t recommend them highly enough.”  ~  Steve B.

“Thanks for all your hard work on my last project.  I’ve featured your company on my website, which is designed to help artists save money so they can continue to make art.”  ~  Punam

“I got my discs back, and I phoned… but wanted to follow up with an email as well. I just could NOT be any happier with how it all came out. It looks EXACTLY how I imagined. There is always so much room for disappointment in these matters, but, you guys did a magnificent job. Also, it was ready a bit early, and for that, I must say thank you! (anxious girl that I am). What a great surprise. For any future projects, I would not dream of going through anybody else. Thank you, thank you, thank you a million times over!”  ~  Kelly H.

A new format for the site is being implemented and, in some cases, this means some website pages are being moved or reorganized.

Silkscreen Printing on CD DVD Discs

May 27, 2010 predisc Leave a comment

At Precision Disc we have two standard print solutions for our replicated CD and DVD discs – up to six spot-colour silkscreen printing as well as CMYK offset printing.

While silkscreen printing is definitely ‘old school’ technology, when compared to CMYK offset printing spot-colour silkscreen printing can still provide superior print results for some designs. We won’t get too involved in the graphic design aspect within this article but we do have other resource material available on the topic of graphic design.

The benefits of silkscreen printing on CD or DVD

Silkscreen printing spot-colours for CD and DVD utilizes pigmented inks with a gloss finish. This is different than CMYK offset printing which utilizes translucent inks and has more of a matte finish.

Due to the consistency of the pigmented spot-colour inks they provide better and more consistent coverage for large areas of solid colour and, additionally, the gloss finish is very appealing to the eye.

Basic design rules for silkscreen printing on CD or DVD

As noted above, when compared to CMYK offset printing, silkscreen printing can provide superior print results for some designs… some, but not all. The best results generally come from artwork that is designed as follows:

  • Maximum of six colours (including white flood)
  • Using line art – not bitmaps.
  • Utilizing large areas of solid colour.
  • Graphics that are bold and don’t feature a lot of fine detail.
  • Text that is relatively bold – not small or featuring fine detail.
  • Avoiding drop-shadows and other effects that feature less than 100% solid colour.
  • Don’t use Photoshop as it outputs graphics and text as bitmaps – not line art.

Supplying Your CD or DVD Duplication Master

February 18, 2010 predisc Leave a comment

On our website we try to make it very clear that the client is responsible for the content they provide to us on their CD or DVD duplication master disc copy. In return, we warranty that our disc replication or duplication will be “exact clones of the Master”.  To quote the website, it says:

  • “We do not review the Master copies you provide to us. This is because your Master copies are deemed to have been supplied to us in final form, which means you have reviewed them and confirm that they are ready to manufacture as supplied without the requirement for any modifications.”

  • “It is very important that you review to your Master and copies from beginning to end – all the way through – to ensure they perform EXACTLY as intended with no errors, skips, pops, fade-outs, etc.”

  • “Remember: The discs you are getting manufactured will be exact clones of the Master copies you provide to us, so whatever is on your Master copies will be on the finished product.”

  • “Be sure to test your Master and copies on different play-back units, both old and new, just to make sure your files are formatted properly for the widest possible compatibility.”

Sometimes our clients ask the question “Why?”

The main reason is this… only the client knows how their CD or DVD duplication master is supposed to perform. For us to decide if aspects of a master are intentional or in error would take a considerable amount of time and, at best, be nothing more that a guess.

Guessing is never an acceptable option, especially when taking into consideration the majority of CD and DVD duplication masters are being produced by people who would have to be considered “do-it-yourselfers” as opposed to professionals, so the only way to be sure that the master is exactly right is to leave the responsibility in the clients hands.

In addition, due to the volume of orders placed each day it wouldn’t be possible to review every master supplied to us from beginning to end without it affecting bottom-line costs. If we did provide the personnel to make such an undertaking possible, the cost would have to be added to the selling price of the product.

Encouraging My Vancouver Client To Shop Local

July 17, 2009 predisc Leave a comment

I had an interesting conversation with a client in Vancouver, B.C. this week. The topic got around to how the internet has revolutionized the buying habits of consumers, whether that be for business or personal use. My client felt that scope of the internet has actually made the idea of shopping ‘local’ redundant. “Why hunt around for a local source when I can easily find a product anywhere in the country or the continent, pay online, and get the goods delivered via courier to my door in Vancouver in a matter of days?”

Certainly an interesting point, but I think it’s a bit short-sited. We were discussing the packaging details for a DVD duplication project he will be sending to us shortly, so I decided to play the role of ‘devils advocate’… but not to the point of offending him, of course.

(A) Time zone: Our company is located in Surrey B.C., just a 30-40 minute drive from his office in Vancouver. Because we’re in the same time zone and work pretty much the same office hours, he can always reach me during the business day. The same can’t be said when dealing (for example) with a company in the East that is 3 hours ahead of us on the West Coast.

(B) Proximity: As mentioned, our office is a reasonably short drive from Vancouver so my client always has the opportunity to visit face-to-face, or even send a same-day courier at a minimum of expense. Closer proximity equates to smaller lag-times for shipping, so he gets his DVD duplication order much sooner, less expensively, and with a much smaller carbon footprint. After all, every extra kilometer of distance means extra transport cost, plus more fuel is consumed and additional pollutants are released in transporting the goods.

(C) Hidden Costs: We do get a fair number of Canadian clients who price shop in the United States and then want to haggle price with us. What they often fail to take into consideration is the currency exchange rate which, at the time of writing this, will add 10% to the cost of the U.S. goods, plus any applicable State tax, cross-border charges such as duty, customs brokerage, etc. The end result is that the “landed cost” of my client’s DVD duplication project to his Vancouver, B.C. doorstep is significantly higher than the original “sticker cost” of the goods. Not such a great bargain after all.

(D) Supporting The Local Economy: “Oh, you’re breaking my heart!” claimed my client when I brought up the notion of supporting the ‘local economy’. With a depressed global economy there’s certainly no more important time than now to shop locally. Spending money at home means keeping local businesses open, which keeps local people employed, which keeps the gears of the local economy lubricated. An ultra-simplistic analogy, but a reasonably fair one.

(E) Laws: Heaven forbid that something goes wrong with an order, to the extent that a manufacturer’s warranty is called upon or, even worse, some sort of legal action ensues. There are laws that protect consumers against fraud and other unpleasant situations, but the laws that protect you in your home Province, State or Country may not protect you when you’re doing business with a company from outside your ‘home court’ or jurisdiction.

In the end, I think I may have put a few dents in my client’s original convictions, but he assured me he wasn’t coming to my company for his DVD duplication work just because we were ‘local’. Instead, he said it’s because we do good work… and… he enjoys the conversations we have!
